Consulting on Cuts

Since starting the This Guy Edits channel, I regularly get requests to review cuts, give notes, and advise on how to punch up the story. I also get asked for career strategy advice, either on how to become a successful editor or how to best position your film in the marketplace.

True, it can be helpful to have a second pair of trained eyes on your film. Especially if you’ve been staring at it for months, it’s easy to get too close to miss the holes in your story, character development, and audience engagement. I can study your film (or scenes) and discuss ideas with you on how to close gaps and optimize your film’s impact.

  • A quick one-session scene review with me can help you pick out the significant, glaring areas for improvement.
  • I can dig deep into your film with you across several sessions to fine-tune your cut to its maximum potential.
  • Film/scene reviews take place in a video call. A few days before the call, please upload a scene or the entire film for me to prepare written notes.
Pricing:
  • Evaluation of a scene or short up to 10 min (incl. timecode-based editing notes plus a 30 min video call): $397 (Direct Booking Link)

TestimonialS:

Adam Bhala Lough, Director (of the upcoming HBO series, “Telemarketers,” produced by Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, Benny & Josh Safdie)

“Sven Pape’s consulting has been an absolute necessity for me as a filmmaker. He provides detailed notes and feedback that go above and beyond the call of duty in a timely manner. His notes are open and honest and without holding back. I would never release a project without having Sven consult first!”

Tarique Qayumi, Director (“Black Kite” – Toronto International Film Festival)

“Thanks for helping us through the thick jungle of indie film editing. You made us kill our baby by literally killing the baby birthing scene at the start of our film, and that changed everything.

The audience has responded very kindly to our character and in diving into the story now with greater ease in this very uneasy story we are telling.
So, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Erik McFarland, Filmmaker

“Having Sven consult on my film was one of the best investments I could have made. I was hesitant because I was already on a tight budget, but I felt the extra money spent on the consult was well worth it.

Sven gave me detailed notes on my edits using Wipster, providing me with frame-by-frame suggestions to make the edit better. He also took the time to approach the edit from a new perspective, proposing new ideas and a scene structure I would have never thought of.

This was all before the video chat, where he not only gave me advice on my specific project but as a creator in general. And he was extremely accommodating in answering questions I had about the industry not directly related to the project.

I’ll definitely be submitting future films for review by Sven and looking forward to our next chats.”

“Sven recently consulted on my short film and I was very impressed with his great attention to detail, thoughtfulness and creativity. He is incredibly affordable for what he provides: expert insight and an objective succinct lens on what is working and what isn’t.

Sven provided detailed notes as well as big picture notes. We were then able to go over everything on a call and even brainstorm on some areas that were struggling. I found this to be invaluable on my project and felt it really helped it get to the next level. I plan to use Sven on future projects as he has proved to be a valuable resource. 10/10!”

Getting good objective feedback is hard. Most is general, based on unspecific feelings, or only calls out a few areas that need work.

I didn’t know what sort of notes I’d get from Sven, but I wanted my film to be the best it could be, so I went for it. I’m so glad I did!

Sven gave detailed notes on what could be improved about the edit. And not just what needed to be changed but why as well. He helped me understand editing concepts at a deeper level so that I felt confident in my next steps.

Getting notes from Sven is going to be a standard practice on my projects from now on. Highly recommended.

After consulting with Sven, not only did I understand pacing and editing of film better, specifically comedy in my case but my short got selected and won festivals across the US, including a finalist for BEST EDITING at the Austin Comedy Film Festival. Ha!

“I was completely stuck on how to move forward on my film until I got Sven’s help. After over a month of editing it on my own, it had become stale, and I wasn’t able to do what needed to be done to finish it. His notes pushed my story forward and helped me bring my film to its fullest potential.

The pacing is so much better than it was; anytime I rewatch what I have, it feels like the first 11 minutes just fly by.

I think since I was so involved with every aspect of this film, it was very hard to approach it from a critical view. It’s much harder to kill your own baby than it is to kill someone else’s.”
